2009 Scholarship Recipients

 

Kaitlin M. Abrams

Kaitlin’s father is a Police Officer with the Montvale Police Department. Kaitlin graduated from the Academy for Medical Science Technology. She was accepted to Fordham University where she plans on studying pre-medicine. In her essay she wrote “It is my promise that my work ethic will enable me to achieve my dream. A gift from the 200 Club would be a true honor, and I would be flattered, privileged and extraordinarily grateful to be chosen as a recipient.

Kara L. Falvey

Kara’s father is a Police Officer with the Teaneck Police Department. Kara graduated from Pompton Lakes High School. She has been accepted by the University of Delaware, Lafayette College and Ursinus College. She plans on studying in the field of science and biology. In her essay she wrote “My future goals are to major in some area of science and then possibly become a veterinarian. I have always loved animals, especially dogs and I feel that I could make a positive impact on many people and animals if I choose this career path. I am extremely excited to start the next chapter of my life.” 

Kevin V. Goralski

Kevin is a volunteer with the Fair Lawn Volunteer Fire Department and graduated Fair Lawn High School. Kevin has been employed since his freshman year in high school for Breaking News Network. He monitors 17 public safety scanners, gathering information from reporters to get breaking news stories. He has been accepted to the University of New Haven where he will study Fire Science with a concentration in Arson Investigation. In his essay he wrote “I am not your average 17 year old and I have come to realize it. My heart is dedicated to help those who call 9-1-1 early in the morning because they are sick or because the have a fire. While my friends are out at the movies having fun I would rather be on a highway extricating a patient from a motor vehicle accident because they need me.”

Kara-Lynn M. Guglielmo

Kara-Lynn’s father is a Police Lieutenant with the Fort Lee Police Department. Kara graduated from Park Ridge High School. She has been accepted to American University, Salve Regina University, Drexel University and St. Joseph’s University. Kara-Lynn plans on studying International Studies with a minor in Spanish. She wrote in her essay “I am bi-lateral hearing impaired, classified at moderate to severe hearing loss. While I have to work harder then most to hear and comprehend, I have not let my disability stand in the way of my academic success or extra curricular activities."

Paul V. Jannicelli

Paul’s father is the Police Chief for the Woodcliff Lake Police Department. Paul graduated from Warwick Valley High School. He has been accepted to Fairleigh Dickinson University where he plans to study Psychology. In his essay he wrote “I have Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, and I selected it as the topic for my three-year science research course in my sophomore year. I am currently in the process of conducting survey-based research to conclude my project. Last year I also took an Advanced Placement psychology course. I am considering fields such as autism and special education for a career.”

Louis A. Kern

Louis’ father is with the Bogota Fire Department. Louis graduated from Bogota Senior High School. He has been accepted to Ramapo College of New Jersey and plans on studying accounting. In his essay he wrote “I have enjoyed being very active in my community and hope to be active at Ramapo College. I would like to someday join the Fire Department, Hose Co. # 3 in Bogota, where my father has been an active member for the past 35 years. Looking beyond college, I hope to secure an Accountant position in a prestigious accounting firm, marry, and raise a family of my own. My parents have been very active and supportive throughout my life. I hope to do the same for my children.”

Brielle D. Klein

Brielle is a volunteer with the Leonia Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She graduated from the Academies at Englewood, Bio and Medicine Academy. She has been accepted to Muhlenberg College and has not yet selected her major. In her essay she wrote “Through my experiences as an EMT and a camp counselor for special needs children, I have found two career options that intrigued me. The first option was to enter the field of special education and my second option was to pursue pediatric medicine. My academic pursuits at Muhlenberg College will guide me down either path. Along with possibly majoring in psychology I am also preparing to stay on a pre-med track. I have the option of either getting my masters in education or medical school. My greatest goal is to impact people’s lives and both of these careers will help me accomplish that.”

Douglas J. Matijakovich

Douglas and his father are both volunteer’s with the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Douglas graduated from Fair Lawn High School. He has been accepted to Penn State, Binghamton University, University of Scranton and Seton Hall. He plans on studying pre-medicine. In his essay he wrote “I have always considered that my passion in life will be to one day become an emergency room physician or a surgeon. Becoming an EMT for the FLVAC has fueled my passion for my studies in medicine and helping people in their greatest time of need. I use to listen to my dad tell me stories about some of the calls he would go on. It made him feel good after helping someone through some very difficult life and death situations. I never knew how good I would feel until I joined the ambulance corps and took some of those same calls myself.”

Kerry E. McNulty

Kerry’s father is with the New Milford Fire Department. Kerry graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy. She has been accepted to The Catholic University of America, Clemson University, Loyola University, Manhattan College, St. Joseph’s University and The University of Scranton. She plans on studying computer science. In her essay she wrote “Working with computers has a lot to do with problem solving and creativity, which I enjoy. I also would like to take classes in other areas that I am interested in including History, Political Science, Photography and Art. I really look forward to spending a semester in college studying abroad. I also want to go on service trips to help people in need. Currently I am very active in Habitat for Humanity and would like to continue working on projects with Habitat anywhere in the world.”

Chelsey R. Mei

Chelsey is a volunteer with the Maywood First Aid & Emergency Squad. She graduated from Hackensack High School. She has been accepted to York College, Ramapo College, Drexel University, Fairfield University and The University of Scranton. She plans on studying nursing. In her essay she wrote “I want to enjoy my career in nursing and be happy with my accomplishments in my life. I want to be close to my family and friends, but mostly I want to be happy with myself and feel confident that chasing this dream will bring this desired fulfillment.”

Robert G. Pawlick

Robert and his father are volunteers with the Leonia Fire Department. Robert graduated from Bergen Catholic High School. He has been accepted to Tulane University, Loyola College, The College of NJ and The Catholic University of America. He has not yet chosen a major. In his essay he wrote “For my life to have true meaning, both present and future, it must be grounded in principle as well as a commitment to volunteerism. In order to lead the best life possible, I believe that I must nurture my ethical character, and, to do so, I must immerse myself in activities and aspire to career opportunities that involve service to others. It is my intention to cultivate a life for myself that mirrors the basic tenets of family and faith.”

Douglas Williams

Douglas’s father is a Detective with the Ridgewood Police Department. Douglas will be graduating from Seton Hall Preparatory High School. He applied to University of Delaware, Brown University, Dartmouth College, Vassar College to name a few. In his essay he wrote “While I am not sure what I want to do after college, one particular area of interest of mine is in the field of English. I have always been fascinated by the power of language and I hope to delve deeper into this subject in my studies at college. One possible type of career that I have considered is as a writer. I have always enjoyed writing and it is definitely one of my strengths as a student. I plan to continue to work just as hard in college in order to get the most possible out of the wonderful opportunity that it provides.”

Brian C. Witting

Brian is a volunteer with the Wallington Fire Department. He graduated from Wallington Senior High School. He has been accepted to Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He plans on majoring in mathematics. In his essay he wrote “I am a kind, caring and compassionate person who loves to help people. The most rewarding moments in my life are when I feel as if I have helped someone, whether it is through my volunteer work with the Fire Department or Emergency Squad or just when I can make someone laugh out loud and forget their troubles."
